Naegleria is a free-living amoeba which occurs naturally in soil and aquatic habitats. The specific species Naegleria fowleri can cause an infection known as primary amoebic meningitis which is usually fatal. The infection pathway is via the nasal cavity which may occur after water enters the nasal cavity.
